I Never Lose Hope – Until I Leave: Singapore Dreams

I’m on a journey for my next dream. I know it’s hard, and the chance of success is only 10%, but I still want to try for that 10%. I’ll never lose hope until the last day I leave this country.

I’ve always tried to follow my dreams, starting from school. During my graduation, I wanted to study outside of Kerala, but my parents didn’t agree. I sacrificed a year, and eventually, they agreed. I know it made them sad, but I believed it would help shape my life. After all, life is all about exploring new things.

I wished to learn computer repair, 3D designing, and web development, and I achieved all of this over the years. Before marriage, I want to complete my post-graduation in “Master of Commerce” (I already completed the first year in June 2016). One of my unfulfilled dreams is to learn the violin. I attended classes but couldn’t finish due to some circumstances. (You can watch my terrible Mohabbatein violin play here :D)

I know that to achieve some of my dreams, I’ve disobeyed my parents. Their restrictions were always out of love, as they just wanted to keep me in a safe zone. The Kerala community is more focused on family ties than on chasing individual dreams. My journey has taught me both good and bad lessons, but I have no regrets—never will—because every decision was mine to make.

Small dreams are now behind me. What lies ahead are bigger, long-term goals. In 2013, I asked my dad for one hundred thousand Indian rupees (₹1,00,000) to go to Singapore and find a job. But he was only willing to support me if I wanted to go to the Gulf countries. He was afraid I might get into trouble in Singapore since I had no relatives or friends there. But in the Gulf (Middle East), there were many Keralites. I believed that if we truly want something, God will show us the way.

I told my dad at the time: “Fine, I’ll go to the Gulf and earn the money to go to Singapore.” Now, I’ve earned money from Qatar, and I’m currently in Singapore, still looking for a job. Why should we be afraid to go to a foreign country? The way becomes clear as long as we have a strong desire. I came here in January 2016 on a one-month visa and returned after that. I got only one interview call after sending over 1,000 emails, even though I’m educated and have good job experience. But unfortunately, there’s no foreign quota for work here. Priority is given to local nationals, even in local shops. It’s good for the country, but not for foreigners! 😄 But I didn’t give up. I came back again in July 2016, and this would be my last attempt. If I don’t succeed, in six years, I’ll fly to Canada, my dream country.

I seek advice only when I feel the need for it, but in my community, there are always people willing to give unsolicited advice. When I resigned from my job in Qatar, one of my flatmates found out that I was going to Singapore. He called me and advised me not to go, saying it would be hard to get a job there. I simply listened and hung up the phone. I don’t like anyone interfering with my dreams. I’m not blaming anyone, though. Sometimes, they’re just looking out for me.

I have a clear picture of how hard this journey is (job hunting in Singapore). Even though things are tough, there’s something called luck. And luck only comes when you take action. So far, I haven’t gotten a single interview call. But no worries—I’ll keep pushing forward. Please pray for me; God can work miracles.

Success and failure are both part of pursuing dreams, but people only seem to accept success. That’s the sad truth. When someone tells me they ran a business and failed, I respect them. Man, they had the guts to try. If I don’t get a job here, some people might say, “I told you so—you couldn’t find a job here, and you just wasted money.” They may see me as a loser and think I’m sad. But guys, it’s all part of the journey. Even my trip to Singapore may seem like a failure, but I’m still coming back successful, with experience, friends, a deeper understanding of a beautiful country, and much more. Money is not the only measure of success.

Guys, we all have many dreams. With God’s blessings, we are born perfect. Have you heard of Nick Vujicic, Sean Stephenson, or Lizzie Velasquez? How did they become successful in life? They chose to fight against their disabilities and turn them into strengths. If they had just sat still, success would never have reached them.

Before I leave this world, I wish to leave a mark—a name people won’t forget. I do many things on social platforms that some may find crazy. People have asked me why I keep paying to maintain WorldQuotes.in when it brings no income. My answer is simple: I believe that one day it will make its impact on the internet. Internet is one of the most powerful tools to reach the world.

We cannot grow without making mistakes. Once, an interviewer asked Bill Gates the secret to his success. He said, “Double your failure rate.” But remember—failure alone isn’t enough; we must learn from it. Please, please never discourage anyone trying to follow their ‘crazy’ dream. They know themselves better than anyone else. They’re not asking you for money—just understanding. If you can’t support them, at least wish them good luck.

Everyone has dreams in their heart, but many are afraid to pursue them because of society’s judgment or fear of failure. But life is short. When we die, let’s not regret the things we never tried. I’ll end with a powerful quote by Les Brown: “The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry out their dream.”

Update : 22-Aug-2016  : I’m leaving Singapore on 24th August after 38 days of stay. Today, I received an interview call in the morning, and they said they’ll inform me of the result later this week. While returning home, at 6:24 PM, I received another interview invitation for tomorrow from a different company. This is what we always say—faith in God. He always does what is right, no matter the result.
